First: The city’s economic activity is concentrated in industrial activity, transformational industries andthe retail trade as opposed to a singular lack of the events and activities in the field of tourism andsubsidiary service activities related to it, where this activity is less than (1%) .
Second: There is a state of weakness in the exploitation of natural resources in the city, which could constitute a solid basis for the emergence of strong economic activities such as food industries, which could serve the cities of the region and Iraq as a whole, for what the city enjoys of great potential in agriculture and fisheries .
Third: The weak role of public sector, where it decreases to very low percentages don’t reach (10%) of total economic activity compared to the private sector’s domination.
Fourth: The private sector suffers from a number of problems partly related to the security situation, and others related to the existence of imbalance in the city's development plans, a decline in services, and the problems of transportation. We can here index the following:
a. the problems related delivery of raw materials;
b. the problems related to marketing products;
c. the problems related to waste disposal; and
d. The problems related to provision of basic services.
Fifth: There is state of interruption or decline in the case of economic growth in most economic
institutions in the last ten years in terms of capital used in the institutions and the number of workers, and a decline in production rates. This situation was linked to the security situation on the one hand, but it is also linked to the limited service systems, the weak transportation systems available, and deficiencies in the exploitation of the enormous potential in the city.
Sixth: The inability of economic activities in the city to use the existing workforce, and this situation is a natural consequence of the state of retreat or stop of growth of the economic institutions, and therefore the presence of high unemployment .
Seventh: Weakness of investment in the city, and therefore the abuse of the great potential existing in tourism, cultural and religious fields .
Eighth: Weakness of diversity in the areas of economic activity in the city, particularly in the center
area, where the city lacks many of the areas of economic and service activity it needs, which impose on the urban planner to consider the incorporation and diversity of the various areas of economic activity in the city in order to create a situation of complementarily and mutual benefit between all areas of economic activity.
Ninth: The old existing economic institutions and non-emergence non-creation of any new economic institution during the last ten years.
Tenth: the study of the transportation system in the city, compared to cities and other religious centers, shows the weakness and inefficiency of the transportation system currently available in the city center.
Eleventh:. there is a problem in the quality and efficiency of services provided for the economic
institutions, such as electricity, water and sewage networks, and solid wastes ..
